Struggling with acid reflux? Don’t worry, I’ve got you!

You know that awful burning sensation in your chest after a big meal  that creeps up your chest like your throat has suddenly turned into a fire-breathing dragon. Or maybe it’s more subtle—an annoying cough, a husky voice, or the feeling of something stuck in your throat. That’s acid reflux also known as GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and it’s more common than you think. According to the NHS 20% of adults in the UK suffer from acid reflux.

Symptoms of acid reflux:

  • Heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest

  • Swallowing difficulties – like food is stuck in your throat

  • Burping

  • Cough

  • Asthma

  • Insomnia

  • Nausea

Typically, PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) like omeprazole or lansoprazole are prescribed, these are acid neutralising drugs.  Sometimes symptoms may not improve, and further investigation is required like, poor digestion, food sensitivities, lifestyle habits like that post-dinner Netflix binge while lying flat on the sofa isn’t helping or stress.

Yes, stress plays a massive role in acid reflux. Ever noticed it flares up after a rough day? When you’re constantly in fight-or-flight mode, digestion takes a backseat, leading to acid reflux.

So, what can you do? Start by paying attention to triggers—certain foods, pay attention to what you are eating (hint: inhaling your food at your desk won’t be helping), late-night snacking, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol or your stress levels. Small changes—like eating slowly, managing stress, and supporting your digestion—can make a huge difference.

A functional medicine approach will always focus on the root cause of your symptoms. If you are struggling, then let’s book in a chat because you shouldn’t have to rely on Gaviscon forever!
