Running on adrenaline or just stressed?
Your adrenal glands are situated just above your kidneys, and they help control your blood pressure. They also produce cortisol which a stress hormone and adrenaline. Producing enough adrenaline is very important for your body as it helps in balancing many aspects such as heart rate. It also helps us deal with danger as part of our fight or flight mechanism.
However, an overuse of adrenaline is not positive for our long-term wellness. We live in a world that can cause many stresses, many self-induced but others caused by the environment we are in. Learning how to spot stress and overuse of adrenaline will help protect you.
How many times have you been driven on the adrenaline rush of a late-night finish at work, the closing of a deal or completion of an important project. In the short term not a problem but if those late nights happen too often or you do not manage project timelines correctly then it can lead to burnout.
Burnout can show up in many ways. Fatigue, irritability, outbursts of anger, anxiety, tears, guilt, poor diet, gut issues or just a lack of interest in your job or home life. It could be that your adrenals just cannot respond quickly to the constant requests you give it.
Acknowledging this and focusing on the causes, learning how to manage or change them will have a positive effect on your wellbeing and your sleep. Learning to say no and asking for help could change your whole future.
